CSIR-CMERI Indigenously Developed Oxygen Enrichment Technology

The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, also known as CMERI Durgapur or CSIR-CMERI Durgapur, has developed an oxygen enrichment technology. This indigenously developed technology would be effective to treat COVID patients.

The CSIR-CMERI also organised a webinar on ‘Oxygen Enrichment Technology’ in partnership with MSME-DI, Raipur, Chattisgarh, Govt of India on April 25, 2021. Joint Director and HOO of MSME DI Raipur Dr. V R Sirsath stated that this technology has exceptional potential and urged the participating industries & entrepreneurs to step forward during this unprecedented pandemic situation and benefit from this device by manufacturing it at earliest.

Director of the CSIR-CMERI Dr. Harish Hirani informed that the unit needs easily accessible oil free reciprocating compressor, pneumatic components and oxygen grade zeolite sieves. The unit can be easily placed in the hospital’s isolation ward. He further informed that the institute will be providing manufacturing guidance and the information on raw materials to the technology transferees.

The unit is capable of delivering up to 15 LPM medical air with a purity of over 90%, informed Sr. Principal Scientist Dr. Anupam Sinha. He also added the unit, if needed, can deliver up to 70 LPM at a purity of 30%.

The Institute is a public engineering research and development institution situated in Durgapur, WB and is a constituent laboratory of the CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). The CMERI is the only national-level research institute for mechanical engineering stream in India.
